Abstrakt: The paper deals with the video codecs of the MPEG family. In a large-scale study, these codecs are compared with one another using a numerical tool (QoE) and a real study in which test subjects present their user experience (UX). The typical impairment parameters of the IP transport platform, i.e. packet loss and burst factor are taken into account. The encoding rates for the video content also play an important role here. In the study, the advantages and disadvantages of these video codecs are analyzed in depth on the basis of the test results, which are graphically displayed in several diagrams. Furthermore, parameterized QoS models are determined for the video codecs considered in this paper, and their effectiveness is also assessed. These QoS models are based on a protocol analysis of the video stream. They are very simple, can be carried out quickly, and are therefore very suitable for practice.

Abstrakt: This paper describes a new measurement method (VS model) for determining the quality of online video services relying on modern H.265/HEVC and VP9 codecs. The said method has been developed on the basis of VQuad-HD curves (according to ITU-T J.341). This model does not refer to signal analysis, but protocol analysis instead. The parameters used are: type of video codec, encoding rate, transport technique, packet loss and burst size. The method may be implemented quickly and easily, which is one of the great advantages when using this method to measure QoS.

Abstrakt: The paper presents selected objective video quality assessment metrics. The authors discuss the usefulness of the PSNR, NQI and SSIM metrics in the face of the disparity of the results which sometimes occur during tests. The measurements were performed in the lossless environment for different videos and using modern VP9 and AV1 codecs with different compression ratios. Based on the high correlation between the results of the objective and subjective quality assessment the PSNR and SSIM metrics were chosen as the objective metrics that well describe the quality of the tested videos. One of the main contributions of the paper is an indication of high usefulness of the presented metrics as tools that may support creation of proper encoding ladders for specific videos. Such ladders define sets of configurations (i.a. data rates and resolutions) for display on a range of end user devices over a range of connection speeds. The tests have confirmed that AV1 codec allows to achieve the same video quality with generating up to 40% smaller file size. However, a several dozens larger processing time that was observed in the case of AV1 codec, indicates that currently it may not be used for live streaming, but only for ‘on demand’ services.

Abstrakt: This paper focuses on the streaming service in Internet, in which video content is encoded using several different methods. At present, Standard H.265/HEVC is the most used method. This paper will compare it with two new encoding methods, VP9 and AV1. Two scenarios—a lossless and a lossy IP environment—were devised for the comparison. The quality of the video stream was outputted as both a MOS value and a PSNR value for both scenarios, the ultimate goal being to determine the benefits and drawbacks of using the different encoding methods for the streaming service in Internet under used the modern MPEG-DASH transport technique.

Abstrakt: In today’s production and service systems, the management process plays a primary role. Analysis of the management process allows the detection of weaknesses and strengths in analyzed systems. This paper production line management processes. For one literature example, a queuing model of a selected production line was built, and its performance and reliability were analyzed. The modelling attempt undertaken here was designed to determine whether queuing theory is suitable for modelling production line processes. Confirmation of this thesis would be a novelty in this field.

Abstrakt: In its early days, consumption of multimedia content was only possible at a stationary terminal device. The music player was located at home, and had to have a physical drive. Over the last decade, there has been an enormous increase in the number of online streaming platforms. These services enable users to consume rich multimedia content on various devices. Thanks to the widespread and availability of portable devices, any person connected to the Internet can access the same content, anytime and everywhere. This fact has forced wireless technologies to put significant emphasis on supporting high-quality content and on-demand services. However, energy consumption of handheld devices along with network bandwidth limitations are still the chief bottlenecks that today’s consumers face. This paper focuses on the consumption of multimedia content using mobile devices. It describes a user case study, carried out in 2019 on 150 individuals from three age groups, that is: 16–18, 19–24, and 25–35 years old, with 50 participants in each group. This survey covers the development of online streaming platforms and aims to help content providers, service providers and policy makers when designing and evaluating systems and services.

Abstrakt: Today’s Internet knows no bounds. New applications are marketed every single day. Many of them incorporate video sequences. These must be transported over the Internet quickly (often in real time). However, the Internet has not been designed for live communications and, regrettably, this may become apparent all too quickly. Countermeasures are required in the form of new, efficient transport techniques facilitating online video services. MPEG-DASH is one of such modern techniques. But how good is this new technique really? This paper delves into the matter. The paper contains an analysis of the impact that the new technology exerts on the quality of video streaming over IP networks. It also describes a new numerical tool – QoSCalc (DASH-HTTP) which has been used to analyze MPEG-DASH under different use scenarios. The results are presented graphically and their interpretation is provided.

Abstrakt: The paper discusses the problem of video transmission in an IP network. The authors consider the ability of using the most popular video codecs that use both the MPEG2 Transport Stream and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH). The main emphasis was given to ensuring the quality of service and quality assessment methods, taking into account not only the service- or network provider’s point of view but also the end user’s perspective. Two quality assessment approaches were presented, i.e. objective and subjective methods. The authors presented the results of the quality evaluation for H.264/MPEG-4, H.265/HEVC and VP9 codecs. The objective measurements, proved by statistical analysis of user opinion scores, confirmed the ability of using H.265 and VP9 codecs in both real time and streaming transmissions, while the quality of video streaming over HTTP with the H.264 codec proved inadequate. The authors also presented a connection between the dynamics of network bandwidth changing and MPEG-DASH mechanism operation and their influence on the quality experienced by users.

Abstrakt: The paper presents video quality assessment issues that include different methods. A subjective video quality assessment of the MPEG-4 / H.264 encoded clips, at the selected bitrates and picture resolutions, is shown. The authors underline the necessity of using a subjective approach to complement objective methods and propose the measurement scenario and the assessment procedure in a specially designed test environment, based on the methods presented by the International Telecommunication Union. The research shows a high correlation between results obtained while using objective and subjective quality assessment methods. The paper presents also the differences between the subjective assessment grades depending on the type of the user equipment, i.e. personal computer and mobile phone. The authors propose a statistical analysis of the results as a method of selecting significant differences between formats of video chunks that may be chosen in video transmission using adaptive streaming techniques over HTTP.

Abstrakt: This book deals with the subject of “Voice over IP” (VoIP), which is an important aspect of today’s communication technology. It provides the reader with an overview of this new network technology. First of all, the basic architectures of such solutions are introduced. The components of these architectures are precisely described in consideration of the aspects that are important to readers when it comes to gaining practical experience. Afterwards, the most important protocols for this new transmission technology will be discussed in detail. Its functionalities will be clarified in many flowcharts. Another part of this book provides information about audio and video source coding. Several chapters of this book consider the issue of “quality of service” (QoS). Abstrakt: VoIP is currently the most widely used technology in telephony. Many providers now implement it in their IP-based networks. However, as flexible and powerful as the IP transport platform might be, it is nonetheless prone to packet loss. Network delay, out-of-order packet delivery and jitter are additional impairment parameters. As a result, Quality of Service (QoS) cannot be guaranteed in VoIP. What effects do network impairment parameters have on QoS in VoIP? What influence does the choice of audio codecs have? How can QoS in VoIP actually be measured in practice? What must a test environment look like if it is to produce reproducible measurement results of QoS in VoIP? What about security in VoIP? The work described in this paper aimed to find answers to these questions. The series of analyses was devised to show up the strengths and weaknesses of the audio codecs currently used in the VoIP service. The paper concludes with a summary and an outlook on further work.

Abstrakt: Present-day IP transport platforms being what they are, it will never be possible to rule out conflicts between the available services. That being the case, the logical conclusion is that the quality of service (QoS) must always be quantifiable no matter what. This goes for real-time / time-critical services such as VoIP, VToIP and IPTV more than others. This paper focuses on the service IPTV, in which video content is encoded using a number of different methods. At present, Standard H.264/AVC is the most commonly used method. This paper will compare it with two new encoding methods, H.265/HEVC and VP9. Two scenarios—a loss-free and a lossy IP environment—were devised for the comparison. Abstrakt: Web browsing is one of many people’s everyday activities, not only for doing business, but also for leisure purposes. From the provider’s point of view it is necessary to know how the service is perceived by the end users and what factors really influence quality. The problem is how to find a relation between objectively measured network performance parameters and the quality perceived by customers. The second problem is how to choose the content and design the web page which will be tested. The authors propose a method of web browsing quality assessment, which is not sensitive to the content and web page design. This makes the method more universal.

Abstrakt: Modern Internet serves as a high-performance platform for an ever-increasing number of services. Some of them - video services in particular - are of the broadband variety. So, it is not surprising that segments of networks can rapidly become congested, which may lead to a deterioration in quality. It is hoped that the new MPEG-DASH technique will alleviate congestion. This paper contains an analysis of the new technology’s impact on the quality of service in IP networks. It also explains a new numerical tool QoSCalc(DASH) that has been used to analyze the DASH method in different scenarios. The results are presented graphically and interpreted.

This paper elaborates on the most important techniques for measuring Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Service (QoS) in Triple Play Services, comparing the most widely used QoE and QoS measurement methods in several series of analyses.

Abstrakt: Current networks are multi-service packet-switched environments, very often based on Internet Protocol, where the provision of good quality services is a great challenge. The most popular service, offered by almost every network, is voice transmission. As a real-time service, it places high demands on bandwidth and delay. The paper describes selected network dimensioning problems for the voice over IP service. The authors discuss service quality measures in legacy circuit switched networks and the key performance indicators that influence the quality of telephone service in packet networks. The main contribution of the paper is the proposal of utilizing the blocking probability calculation, which is based on the B-Erlang model used in legacy systems, to estimate the average bandwidth needed to handle a number of sources generating voice traffic in IP networks. Taking into account the average bandwidth required to carry out a one voice conversation, the total network capacity was calculated. The authors made analytical calculations which were confirmed by simulation studies. The problem of using different codecs and their influence on bandwidth consumption and overall service quality experienced by a user were also discussed in the paper. At the end of the paper, the authors defined the directions of further research that should be carried out, i.e. the development of dimensioning methods for networks carrying multimedia services with particular attention paid to video transmission and reliable quality assessment.

Abstrakt: VoIP (Voice over IP) należy do tych nowoczesnych usług, które wykazują duży potencjał wzrostu na rynku. Jako platformę transportową wykorzystuje ona sieć IP. Jednakże jeden problem pozostaje tutaj nadal otwarty, tzn. jakość usługi VoIP (Quality of Service: QoS). Temu tematowi jest poświęcona niniejsza praca. Głównymi parametrami mającymi wpływ na QoS są strata pakietów i opóźnienie pomiędzy urządzeniami końcowymi (E2E delay). Wyniki badań związane z tymi parametrami zostaną przedstawione na diagramach i będą odpowiednio zinterpretowane. Dostarczają one ważnych informacji dla planowania tego rodzaju usług i implementowania metod wspierających jakość omawianej usługi. Ponadto mogą one być wykorzystane również do budowy urządzeń służących do pomiaru jakości usługi VoIP.

Abstrakt: With traveling professions and nomadic lifestyles on the increase there is a growing need for comprehensive mobile networking within the Next Generation Network, and the security, reliability and technical independency of the Short Message Service (SMS) is becoming more and more indispensable for business processes. Since competitiveness goes hand-in-hand with this business capability, and methods to determine the quality of this service are becoming equally indispensable. This paper presents possible methods to evaluate the “Completion Rate of SMS” and “End-to-End Delivery Time” and combinations of them (new metric in this paper). A software tool, QoSCalc(SMS), has been developed in collaboration with the authors in order to verify whether service providers are abiding by the Service Level Agreements. The tool has been tested in a real measurement environment and the results are presented graphically here and interpreted.

Abstrakt: This paper focuses on factors affecting dimensioning of SMS systems in mobile communications networks. It begins with a brief description of the problems associated with QoS in modern communications networks in general before going on to describe the main parameters that define QoS in the SM Service. It will then explain the functionality of the SM Service in terms of ETSI standards. The next section will describe the creation of a queuing model for an SMS System based on that ETSI document, which will then be analysed in calculations. The parameter completion rate plays an important role in SMS. The paper will also take a close look at practical aspects of the E2E delivery time for SMS. The approach suggested in this paper and the insights gained in the course of this work can be put to practical use in the planning and analysis of real SMS systems. Therein lies the chief merit of this paper.

Abstrakt: Applications provided in the Internet of Things can generally be divided into three categories: audio, video and data. This has given rise to the popular term Triple Play Services. The most important audio applications are Voice over IP (VoIP) and audio streaming. The most notable video applications are Video Telephony over IP (VToIP), Television over IP (IPTV), and video streaming, and the service World Wide Web (WWW) is the most prominent example of datatype services. Abstrakt: Present-day IP transport platforms being what they are, it will never be possible to rule out conflicts between the available services. The logical consequence of this assertion is the inevitable conclusion that the quality of service (QoS) must always be quantifiable no matter what. This paper focuses on one method to determine QoS. It defines an innovative, simple model that can evaluate the QoS of MP3-coded voice data transported through an IP environment. It describes tests of the model’s practicability that were conducted in a comprehensive comparison study. The so-called MP3 Model is one of a number of parameter-based measuring techniques and delivers results that come very close to the corresponding perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) curves. This is one of the features that make this new QoS measuring method so attractive.

Abstrakt: Od początku XXI daje się zaobserwować w Internecie zupełnie nowe zjawisko – podłączanie do niego rzeczy (przedmiotów). Liczba rzeczy, które są podłączane do Internetu rośnie wykładniczo. W roku 2000 było ich niespełna 200 milionów, w 2008 – ich liczba zrównała się z wielkością populacji ludzi na świecie. Dzisiaj jest to kilkanaście miliardów. Podłączanie przedmiotów do sieci stało się możliwe dzięki procesom ucyfrowienia przedmiotów, które mogą pośrednio lub bezpośrednio gromadzić, przetwarzać oraz wymieniać dane za pośrednictwem sieci komputerowej. Przy zapewnieniu, że wszystkie te przedmioty będą również posiadać unikatowe w skali świata identyfikatory, rozbudowany w ten sposób Internet nazywamy Internetem Rzeczy (ang. Internet of Things – IoT). Oczywiście liczba podłączonych przedmiotów powinna być odpowiednio duża. W wielu ublikacjach wymienia się liczbę 50 miliardów (równa kilku % wszystkich rzeczy, które można obecnie połączyć). Zatem dzisiaj stwierdzenie, ze Internet to sieć połączonych ze sobą komputerów już nie jest prawdziwe. Prognozy analityków mówią, ze rok 2020 może być przełomowy - połączonych przedmiotów będzie ponad 50 mld, a Internet rzeczy stanie się faktem [1]. Już dzisiaj jego wpływ na otaczający nas świat staje się coraz bardziej widoczny. Przewiduje się, że może on spowodować wręcz rewolucyjne zmiany w organizacji nie tylko gospodarki z wykorzystaniem sieci Internet, ale również zachowań poszczególnych ludzi jak i całych społeczeństw [2,3,4].
