Słowa kluczowe: sailing tourism, tourism management, COVID-19, functioning of the tourism, functioning of sailors’ society in the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstrakt: In 2020, tourism was highly affected by COVID-19 and its restrictions, such as tourist traffic. Decisions related to trips were made in a state of high risk and uncertainty. This article’s main aim is to present the results of research on decision making by people practising sailing tourism during COVID-19. The survey was conducted in the first quarter of 2021 on 580 sailors from Poland, Germany, Croatia, Italy, France, and Turkey. This is interesting because of the specificity of this form of nautical tourism, which is characterised by high flexibility in the planning and implementation of the cruise. Sailing tourism is also environmentally friendly due to the type of propulsion used and the low noise levels generated. Research has shown that country-specific travel restrictions impact sailing tourism and cruise decisions. The obtained results are important for developing sailing tourism and may contribute to rationalising decisions taken during crises.

Abstrakt: The article aimed to show which of the restrictions and limitations imposed in connection with the pandemic were the most burdensome for the participants of nautical tourism. It presents the opinions of 580 sailors from six countries: Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Turkey. Research has shown that in the 2020 sailing season, sailors have observed many changes in the functioning of the ports, the services available in their area, and the behavior of other sailors. The restrictions introduced by some countries were sometimes very troublesome for tourists - they forced them to change their previous plans and caused a feeling of uncertainty. Among the most burdensome, the respondents considered those that restricted the free crossing of borders. The obtained results are essential for developing nautical tourism and may contribute to rationalizing decisions taken in a crisis.

Tytuł: Exploring opportunities of using the sharing economy in sustainable urban freight transport

Autor/Autorzy: Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz, Natalia Wagner

Miejsce publikacji: Sustainable Cities and Society

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: sharing economy, crowdshipping, urban freight, transport, city logistics, sustainable city transport

Abstrakt: Reliance on the sharing economy is becoming crucial to the functioning of modern cities. Certain sharing economy-based solutions can contribute to the development of sustainable urban freight transport by reducing the number of delivery vans in service and using green vehicles. This paper evaluates the potential of the sharing economy for freight deliveries in the Polish cities. The authors examine two types of sharing platform-based solutions for light commercial vehicles (LCV), namely LCV-sharing and crowdshipping, along with the general perception of sharing platforms by the Polish citizens and their motivation to use them. Two research methods have been employed. The multi-case study method has been applied to assess the LCV-sharing market and identify the best crowdshipping practices. General interest of the public in the sharing economy has been examined by means of a survey analysis. The results show that, albeit with little market presence, the LCV-sharing is continuously winning new customers in the major Polish cities. Provided by car-sharing operators who have expanded their offering with delivery vans, or by operators who target the freight market alone, the service is a more environmentally-friendly and economical alternative to leasing, especially for companies which do not need extensive use of delivery vans. Further development of LCV-sharing depends largely on availability of the service and its price, as well as on the general awareness of benefits from the sharing business model and the strengthening of confidence in it.

Tytuł: Data Security as the Basis for the Operation of Online Travel Platforms on the Example of Platforms Dedicated to Nautical Tourism: Cyber Analysis and Geographical Impacts

Autor/Autorzy: Enrico Panai, Aleksandra Łapko, Maria Veronica Camerada, Gavino Mariotti, Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz

Słowa kluczowe: online platforms, cyber security, tourism management, nautical tourism, cyber geography

Abstrakt: Trust has emerged as a key factor in any virtual transaction. Therefore, the protection of trustworthiness should be a central matter of concern in the online tourism sector, especially in emerging and, hence, more fragile markets such as nautical tourism. In this study, an exploratory investigation was conducted of four online sailing platforms using an inductive content analysis of the data collected. The goal was to examine cybersecurity-related indicators that may affect trustworthiness of the platforms. To this end, the study focused on two freely accessible types of information: the level of transaction security and the level of concern for personal privacy. Given that it may be unclear to many users how a small text file (a cookie) created by a website and stored in the user’s computer can affect the user’s privacy, an interdisciplinary disclosive computer ethics approach was used for unveiling the risk related to cookies, especially third-party cookies, or web trackers. Interestingly, geopolitical and geoeconomic correlations were noted when interpreting the findings from a geographical point of view, although it was concluded that more research is needed to better understand the phenomenon. However, notwithstanding the relatively limited sample, this work offers valuable insights into a systematic understanding of how cybersecurity contributes to increased trust and, hence, improved competitiveness.

Tytuł: Concerns about the technology used by collaborative platforms - a challenge for managers

Autor/Autorzy: Natalia Wagner, Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz

Miejsce publikacji: Procedia Computer Science

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: collaborative platform, technology management, sharing economy, platforms management

Abstrakt: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the access-based consumption model, which is becoming an alternative to the traditional ownership-based model. The development of business models based on collaborative consumption has become possible, among others, thanks to the development of ICT tools and easy access to the internet. The paper focuses on examining users’ opinions on the technological aspect of the functioning of sharing platforms. The following research question was asked: Do concerns of using technological solutions discourage the use of collaborative platforms? The research method used in the paper was a survey addressed to current and potential users of such platforms in Szczecin, Poland. The survey covered 403 respondents. In order to present the results, descriptive statistics were used and the Technology Fear Index (TFI) was constructed - a management tool that informs about the size of respondents’ fear of technologies used by collaborative platforms. The results showed that there are concerns of using technology, although they cannot be considered a disincentive to the use of collaborative platforms. A solution that can minimize users’ concerns may be a wider inclusion of external trusted websites responsible for e.g. identity management and mobile payments. Reducing some of users’ concerns may also be ensured by the platform’s participation in a cross-community reputation system.

Tytuł: Applying the Business Model Canvas to Design the E-platform for Sailing Tourism

Autor/Autorzy: Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz, Natalia Wagner, Aleksandra Łapko, Ewa Hącia

Miejsce publikacji: Procedia Computer Science

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: Business Model Canvas, internet tools, tourism management, sailing tourism, sustainable tourism

Abstrakt: In recent years, intensive development of sailing tourism has been observed in various regions of the world. This is a beneficial phenomenon from the point of view of sustainable tourism development because sailing yachts are powered by the wind and therefore do not emit exhaust gas into the atmosphere. Tourists usually travel in small groups, which is not mass tourism that disrupts local communities. It is tourism practised in close contact and with respect for nature. The conducted research combine sailing tourism and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools which are insufficiently used by entities associated with the sailing tourism market. Sailing market research allowed to identify the need to design a comprehensive e-platform for sailing tourism. Its functionality would not only allow a wide presentation of the offer and reach a wide range of tourists but also enables transactions. The aim of the paper is to develop the original concept of a business model of e-platform for sailing tourism. The presented concept is grounded on modified Business Model Canvas (BMC) in terms of its structure and operationalization. The role of cooperation for the development of sailing tourism between private entities and representatives of regional institutions and organizations at national and international levels was emphasized. The cooperation manifested in the integration of activities will allow creating a product commonly used by tourists.

Tytuł: Air quality as a factor affecting urban tourism

Autor/Autorzy: Aleksandra Łapko, Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz, Aleksander Panasiuk

Miejsce publikacji: Studia Periegetica

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: urban tourism, tourism management, tourist attractiveness, sustainable tourism

Abstrakt: The purpose of the article is to determine whether potential tourists consider information about a city’s air quality in their assessment of its tourist attractiveness and how this this information affects their travel decisions. Urban tourism is a common and dynamically developing form of tourism. Cities encourage tourists to visit them with various attractions, cultural, gastronomic and accommodation offerings as well as mass events. At the same time, they are often industrial centres and important transportation hubs, which makes them characterized by a high degree of air pollution. The article presents results of a survey involving 509 respondents from Poland. The data were used to assessment to what extent information about air quality in a given city is relevant for people planning a tourist trip. In addition, the survey provided information about factors that could increase the respondents’ interest in the level of air quality in a city they were planning to visit. Particular attention was paid to the respondents’ health. Many diseases can be the result of air pollution, or can be aggravated by substances contained in smog. Therefore, the authors tried to determine whether people suffering from such illnesses were more likely to pay special attention to air quality in their prospective destinations. The results constitute a significant contribution to the knowledge about the factors affecting demand in urban tourism. They may be relevant for entities responsible for managing cities and promoting tourism products. The article also draws attention to the fact that problems arising from air pollution in cities can affect not only their residents, but also tourists.

Autor/Autorzy: Agnieszka Deja, Magdalena Kaup, Roma Strulak-Wójcikiewicz

Rok: 2019

Słowa kluczowe: Container logistics chains, Inland water transport, River-seaport of Szczecin, Sustainable transport, Logistics chain management

Abstrakt: The growth of container trade at sea and inland ports has necessitated a better integration of water and land transport, which entails the need to expand the hinterland and accessibility from the land side. The infrastructure investment projects completed so far, aimed at improving the efficiency of transport in the hinterland, are the basis for creating new container logistics chains. In many ports of the European Union, the potential of inland waterway transport has been exploited for a long time as an integral component of sustainable transport. In the long run, it will not be possible to efficiently meet the growing demand for container transport in Europe by using only road and rail transport. Therefore, it is important to seek carriage capabilities in environment-friendly modes of transport. Looking into the case of the river-seaport of Szczecin, this author presents a concept of transport organization model involving inland waterway transport in container-based logistics chains. The analysis of the conditions for the functioning of such chains may provide a basis for developing directions to continue to develop the sea and inland ports in Poland.

Abstrakt: Waste reception management processes and downstream waste management are a key component of reverse logistics in waste management. The paper discusses the problems of management in the reception of waste and cargo residues from ships at ports as a place where all kinds of pollution are generated, received and disposed of in parallel. The paper presents the role of reverse logistics in waste management and provides a description of selected legislation governing the reception of ship-generated waste and cargo residues from seagoing vessels. Furthermore, we have analysed the system for the reception of ship-generated waste and cargo residues at the sea-river port of Szczecin covering all ships using quays on its premises. Additionally, we discuss the importance of efficient management of the reception and downstream management operations for financial reasons, to minimise the cost to the logistics system and the environment with a view to protecting the environment.

Abstrakt: This article deals with the issue of waste collection from yachts and tall ships that is important from the perspective of sustainable tourism. There are, of course, procedures that regulate the passing of waste by vessels, which also apply to tourist vessels. However, the authors made an attempt to analyze the process of waste collection carried out under non-standard conditions, i.e., during a mass event held at the port of the Tall Ships Races final, which took place in 2017 in Szczecin. Many yachts and tall ships participated in the event, and in addition, due to the multiplicity of attractions, the event area was very popular among tourists and visitors (over one and a half million people in three days). Due to the safety of the participants, and the need to maintain high aesthetic standards, the procedures for collecting waste from vessels had to be modified. In addition to the preparation of a flowchart on which the existing procedural modifications were presented, based on the source data received from the waste collection company, quantitative and structural analyses of the waste were carried out. The conducted research showed that the waste collection required the coordination of the activities of many entities. This article also draws attention to operational problems that occurred during waste collection from vessels during the Tall Ships Races final. Statistical analysis allowed for the determination of the days where the vessels disposed the most solid and liquid waste, and how the structure of the amount of collected waste was shaped. The Tall Ships Races is the most popular and the biggest event of this type in the world—gathering the largest number of tall ships. They are carried out annually, and their route leads through various ports; however, the regatta final is the culminating point that attracts the largest number of tourists. For this reason, many cities are trying to become its organizers. In 2018, the finals took place in the Dutch port of Harlingen, and in 2019, the Danish port of Aarhus will be responsible for its organization. Two years later, in 2021, the Tall Ships Races regatta final will be hosted by Szczecin again. The results of the research conducted in this article may be helpful for appropriate preparation by subsequent ports for waste collection, which may contribute to the safety of the participants taking part in the event.
