Tytuł: Effects of Incorporating Rail Transport into a Zero-Emission Urban Deliveries System: Application of Light Freight Railway (LFR) Electric Trains

Autor/Autorzy: Krystian Pietrzak, Oliwia Pietrzak, Andrzej Montwiłł

Miejsce publikacji: Energies

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: city logistics, electric vehicles, electromobility, external costs of transport, Light Freight Railway, sustainable urban freight transport, urban consolidation center, zero-emission vehicles, last-mile delivery

Abstrakt: This paper addresses the issue of incorporating rail transport into an urban delivery system. Its main purpose was to identify the possibilities of utilising rail transport in a Zero-emission Urban Delivery System (ZUDS) by applying Light Freight Railway (LFR) electric trains. The study applied the following research methods: literature review, observation, case study, and mathematical computations. In order to estimate the volume of transport external costs reduction resulting from shifting urban deliveries from road to rail transport in the city of Szczecin, the EU methodology was applied to specify the amounts of external costs generated by individual modes and means of transport. The research study showed that application of LFR electric trains makes it possible to significantly reduce external costs generated by transport. Moreover, this solution may have an impact on developing Clean Transport Zones (CTZs) and may also contribute to expansion of the ZUDS. The research study results also provide grounds to conclude that application of the LFR system makes it possible to reduce negative effects generated by Urban Freight Transport (UFT) and to achieve a coherent zero-emission system for handling cargo and passenger flows in cities, which consequently contributes to achieving electromobility goals in transport.

Miejsce publikacji: Sustainable Cities and Society

Rok: 2021

Słowa kluczowe: cargo tram, passenger tram, cargo flows, city logistics, sustainable transport, sustainable city

Abstrakt: Trams are usually used to carry passengers, but across Europe there are some examples of using them for carrying freight (‘CarGoTram’ of Dresden, Germany and the ‘Cargo-Tram’ of Zurich, Switzerland). There are specific conditions that provide a possibility of using trams for cargo delivery in urban areas. They concern infrastructural, economic, and organisational issues. The main purpose of this article was to identify the conditions and determine the possibilities of implementing a cargo tram in urban areas in Poland. This article has shown that in individual urban transportation systems there are factors that facilitate or inhibit implementation of cargo trams in UFT, and implementation of a concrete solution should be adjusted to the local conditions so that the tram transport system is not disturbed in providing its basic function, i.e. serving the public passenger traffic. To achieve the assumed aim, the following research methods were used: literature review, documentary method, Delphi method, and case study. The area of research was the city of Szczecin, Poland.

Abstrakt: Rail transport is becoming an increasingly common mode of transport supporting agglomeration/metropolitan traffic. It is affected by a variety of factors, such as substantial degree of punctuality and safety, possibility of transporting a significant number of passengers at the same time, limited negative impact on the natural environment and the quality of being independent from road congestion. The emerging metropolitan rail networks can effectively counteract the uncontrolled development of individual transport, thus promoting the use of public transport in handling passenger traffic in urban and metropolitan areas. The primary purpose of the chapter was to identify current barriers hampering the use of public transportation by metropolitan residents and show the possibility of reducing those barriers by a metropolitan railway system on the example of the Szczecin Metropolitan Railway investment project in Poland. To this end, the following research methods were applied: critical evaluation of the relevant literature, documentary method, survey method, and individual in-depth interviews. In addition, the results of research carried out by the Authors during the implementation of the “Concept of the Szczecin Metropolitan Railway” (2012) and “Feasibility Study of the Szczecin Metropolitan Railway” (2014–2015) were used. The area of research was the Szczecin Metropolitan Area (SMA), Poland.

Abstrakt: This article discusses the issues of rail freight transport functioning in urban areas. The main purpose of this article is to identify the conditions for implementing the Light Freight Railway (LFR) as an innovative solution for Sustainable Urban Freight Transport. To achieve the assumed goal, the following research methods were used: literature review, documentary method and Delphi method. The area covered by the research is the Szczecin Metropolitan Area, Poland. The study has demonstrated that despite the features that univocally determine the place and role of rail transport on the service market, it is important to implement innovative solutions that involve rail transport. The concept presented by the authors can help use railway to carry cargoes on short distances in urban areas. The proposed system is in line with the assumptions of sustainable development of transport. The conducted research has shown that implementation of the LFR is conditioned by a number of factors of technical and organisational nature, but it can contribute to achieving certain short- and long-term benefits. The LFR concept is an autonomous solution that can be implemented in individual urban areas, regardless of any solutions applied in other areas within a given transport chain.

Słowa kluczowe: electromobility, emission costs, electric vehicles, zero-emission buses, air pollution, public transport, sustainable transport, transport management, renewable energy sources

Abstrakt: This paper focuses on effects of implementing zero-emission buses in public transport fleets in urban areas in the context of electromobility assumptions. It fills the literature gap in the area of research on the impact of the energy mix of a given country on the issues raised in this article. The main purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse economic effects of implementing zero-emission buses in public transport in cities. The research area was the city of Szczecin, Poland. The research study was completed using the following research methods: literature review, document analysis (legal acts and internal documents), case study, ratio analysis, and comparative analysis of selected variants (investment variant and base variant). The conducted research study has shown that economic benefits resulting from implementing zero-emission buses in an urban transport fleet are limited by the current energy mix structure of the given country. An unfavourable energy mix may lead to increased emissions of SO2 and CO2 resulting from operation of this kind of vehicle. Therefore, achieving full effects in the field of electromobility in the given country depends on taking concurrent actions in order to diversify the power generation sources, and in particular on increasing the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

Tytuł: ANALYSIS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF REDUCING EXTERNAL COSTS OF TRANSPORT WITHIN LAND-SEA TRANSPORT CHAINS ON THE EXAMPLE OF ZACHODNIOPOMORSKIE VOIVODESHIP, POLAND

Autor/Autorzy: Andrzej Montwiłł, Krystian Pietrzak, Oliwia Pietrzak

Miejsce publikacji: Transport Problems

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: transportation system, land-sea transport chains, external costs, sustainable development, transport management, transport infrastructure

Abstrakt: Land-sea transport chains constitute a key part of the Europe’s economy, as a significant part of its trade is carried out using sea transport. Transport, storage, or delivery processes carried out within these chains are characterized by specified economic and technical efficiency, which often does not take into consideration the external costs these processes generate. Therefore, there is a need for further changes in the European land-sea transport chains, the aim of which should be a further reduction of the negative influence of transport on the society and the environment, in accordance with the assumptions adopted under the EU’s sustainable development policy. The article examines the land-sea freight transport chains in terms of the EU’s sustainable development goals on the example of Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship (ZV), Poland. The region was selected owing to two key factors. First, the transport chains across the region are typical for many European areas. Second, the region itself has experienced intensive development of the Transport, Shipping and Logistics (TSL) sector and a number of changes in freight flows for several years. The main goal of the article was to identify the possibility of reducing external costs resulting from the use of combined transport solutions in ZV. Two case studies were analyzed for this purpose. In both of them, the assumed effect was the reduction of external costs of freight transport in ZV. The potential reduction of external costs generated by cargo transport in ZV was estimated on the basis of the European methodology in terms of the amount of external costs generated by individual modes and means of transport. The research showed that the implementation of combined transport in ZV can bring measurable benefits to the region. The analyses also allowed for the identification of technical and organizational activities that are crucial for ZV and make it possible to reduce negative transport effects.

Tytuł: Environmental Effects of Electromobility in a Sustainable Urban Public Transport

Autor/Autorzy: Krystian Pietrzak, Oliwia Pietrzak

Miejsce publikacji: Sustainability

Rok: 2020

Słowa kluczowe: electromobility, electric vehicles, EVs, air pollution, transport, public transport, urban transport, sustainable transport, transport management, transportation systems

Abstrakt: This article has taken up an issue concerning the influence of the implementation of electromobility assumptions on reduction of air pollution in cities in terms of sustainable urban transport systems. The essential nature of the subject is confirmed by the following figures: transport is responsible for almost 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe and is the main cause of air pollution in cities, almost 90% of city dwellers in the EU are exposed to levels of air pollutants deemed harmful by the WHO, and approximately 95% of vehicles on European roads still use fossil fuels. Therefore, the implemented transport policy, both in the international and domestic aspect of particular countries, is facing the need to significantly reduce the negative influence of transport on people and the environment. Electromobility has become one of the concepts that makes it possible to achieve this goal. Its main objective is to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment by deploying electric vehicles (EVs). Research conducted by the authors showed that public transport, apart from the obvious effect of decreased number of private vehicles and decreased congestion, can contribute to reduced air pollutant emissions and become a significant driver for the implementation of electromobility in cities. However, the achievement of this goal depends on taking appropriate actions not only in the transport branch but also in other sectors of economy. The following research methods were applied in the article: literature analysis, documentary method, case study, and mathematical methods. The research area was the city of Szczecin, Poland.

Tytuł: The role of railway in handling transport services of cities and agglomerations

Autor/Autorzy: Oliwia Pietrzak, Krystian Pietrzak

Miejsce publikacji: Transportation Research Procedia

Rok: 2019

Słowa kluczowe: railway, rail transport, urban transport, freight transport, transport systems, sustainable development, green city, smart city, agglomeration, Light Freight Railway

Abstrakt: The article discusses the changes in handling transport services of cities and agglomerations and the importance of railway in this aspect. Considerations on the transformation of the transport market, being the effect of changes on the market of goods and services and economic growth, the reasons for using railway transport in servicing urban and agglomeration traffic were identified. For many years the features characterizing rail transport have constituted a determinant of its use for the long-distance transport of homogeneous large cargo mass and long-distance transport of a significant number of passengers. The economic growth, and thus the increase in requirements on the transport market, caused a significant development of road transport in the short term. However, due to the negative external effects generated by this transport, as well as the change in the transport policy of individual countries and regions, steps have been taken towards the inter-branch diversification of transport services. Together with the dissemination of the concept of sustainable development, protection of the interests of future generations and limitation of emissions of harmful substances into the natural environment, innovative concepts, products and services to meet the tasks of a modern and responsible market appeared. The purpose of this article was to answer the following question: Is there a possibility for rail transport to be an important element of sustainable urban transport systems? Therefore, the article presents the concept of using an innovative system of self-propelled train compositions for handling transport services of cities and agglomerations. These train compositions, due to their limited length, their own propulsion system, and the control cabins located at both sides of the train, can be an alternative for handling feeder and transfer services in the agglomeration area, previously implemented mainly by means of road transport. The research area was Szczecin agglomeration with the city of Szczecin. Considerations and inferences were made on the basis of literature analysis, documentary method, external observation and methods of analysis and synthesis. This publication and/or research have been partially financed under the grant No 3/S/IZT/2018 financed from a subsidy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for statutory activities.

Słowa kluczowe: development of offshore vessels, offshore oil and gas industry

Abstrakt: This article presents an analysis of main development and demand factors for offshore vessels in this industry and its influence on prospects of future development of main players and suppliers in shipbuilding sector in Europe. In author’s opinion, major drivers are: economic activity and population of the world, global energy consumption and demand, world oil and gas prices, demand and supply, global trends also, investments in renewable/alternative energy and clean power generation, discovery of new sources of energy and current situation on the offshore market. There are many other factors also and unfortunately there is no possibility in such short article describe all of them. These factors are global as well as sectoral, and in the case of shipowners - also internal. Their strength and direction for the development and demand for offshore vessels is diverse, therefore they also have a different meaning in this process. However, all these factors, to a greater or lesser degree determine the present and future volume as well as a structure by type of the fleet in question.
