Słowa kluczowe: city multifloor manufacturing; smart sustainable production management; foam ceramic sintering; high-temperature furnace; energy-efficient thermal cycle

Abstrakt: The development of environmentally friendly technologies, including additive technologies, contributes to the formation of sustainable production in city multifloor manufacturing clusters (CMFMCs). This paper discusses an approach to the implementation of energy-intensive technological processes in such clusters using examples of the manufacturing of ceramic and metal–ceramic products. The manufacturing of ceramic and metal–ceramic products in high-temperature furnaces is associated with an increased electricity consumption. The use of modern ceramic micro- and nanopowders makes it possible to switch to more energy-saving technologies by reducing the sintering temperature and shortening the technological cycle. This requires the use of additional activating and inhibiting additives in the initial powder mixtures to obtain products with the necessary physical and mechanical properties. The purpose of this paper is to present a model and indicators to assess the energy efficiency of the choice of sintering technology of foam ceramic filters for smart sustainable production management within CMFMCs. The use of the proposed indicators for assessing the energy efficiency of sintering foam ceramic filters makes it possible to improve the technological process and reduce the completion time of its thermal cycle by 19%, and reduce the maximum heating temperature by 20% to 1350 °C. The adoption of a different oxide technological alternative and the use of the proposed model and indicators to assess the energy efficiency of the sintering technology of foam ceramic filters allows to choose less energy-intensive equipment and save up to 40% in electricity. The proposed model to assess the energy efficiency of the sintering technology of foam ceramic filters can be used to control their production under the power consumption limitations within the CMFMCs.

Abstrakt: This study focuses on management ways within a city multi-floor manufacturing cluster (MFMC). The application of MFMC in megapolises is closely related to the problem of urban spatial development and the problem of matching transport and logistics services. The operation of the MFMC depends on the efficiency of production and transport management considering technical, economic, end environmental factors. Therefore, conditions affecting decision-making in the field of production planning by MFMCs and accompanying transports within the agglomeration area with the use of the production-service platform were presented. Assumptions were created for the decision model, allowing for the selection of partners within the MFMC to execute the production order. A simplified decision model using the Hungarian algorithm was proposed, which was verified with the use of test data. The model is universal for material flow analysis and is an assessments basis for smart sustainable supply chain decision-making and planning. Despite the narrowing of the scope of the analysis and the simplifications applied, the presented model using the Hungarian algorithm demonstrated its potential to solve the problem of partner selection for the execution of the contract by MFMC.

Słowa kluczowe: river ports, waterways, intermodal transport, location, multicriteria decision-making method

Abstrakt: The paper responds to research problems related to the implementation of large-scale investment projects in waterways in Europe. As part of design and construction works, it is necessary to indicate river ports that play a major role within the European transport network as intermodal nodes. This entails a number of challenges, the cardinal one being the optimal selection of port locations, taking into account the new transport, economic, and geopolitical situation that will be brought about by modernized waterways. The aim of the paper was to present an original methodology for determining port locations for modernized waterways based on non-cost criteria, as an extended multicriteria decision-making method (MCDM) and employing GIS (Geographic Information System)-based tools for spatial analysis. The methodology was designed to be applicable to the varying conditions of a river’s hydroengineering structures (free-flowing river, canalized river, and canals) and adjustable to the requirements posed by intermodal supply chains. The method was applied to study the Odra River Waterway, which allowed the formulation of recommendations regarding the application of the method in the case of different river sections at every stage of the research.

Słowa kluczowe: city manufacturing, sustainable processes, spply chain, management, logistics, freight transport, elevator

Abstrakt: The application of multi-floor manufacturing (MFM) in huge cities is related to the rational use of urban areas and the solution to traffic problems. The operation of the city MFM clusters depends on the efficiency of production and transport management considering technical, economic, environmental, and other factors. The primary goal of this paper was to identify and analyze the drivers of sustainable supply chains (SSCs) that influence or encourage the design of sustainable processes in city MFM clusters under uncertainty in supply chains. This paper presents an SSC performance model for city MFM clusters under uncertainty. The proposed model is universal and is based on material flow analysis (MFA) methodology. The presented analysis helps to determine the conditions for rhythmic deliveries with the use of the multi-IRTs. The coefficients of rhythmic deliveries for multiple intelligent reconfigurable trolleys (IRTs) and the capacity loss of freight elevators allow us to periodically assess the sustainability processes in city MFM clusters related to the flow materials. These assessments are the basis for the decision-making and planning of SSCs.

Słowa kluczowe: Blockchain, sea shipping, maritime logistics, maritime supply chain management

Abstrakt: Blockchain technology is mainly implemented in the financial services. However, there are more and more companies from different industries considering the possibility of using this technology. Potential benefits of blockchain are also recognized in logistics management. In sea shipping similar to other transport modes the application of blockchain-based solutions is still a new phenomenon. The paper presents a growing interest in blockchain technology in the area of transport and logistics and in maritime logistics in particular. The main aim of the paper is to classify current and planned applications of blockchain technology in sea shipping. To achieve this goal, two research methods were used: web content analysis and multi-case study. The results show that there are several container shipowners active in the blockchain projects, however, in terms of tonnage, they represent as much as 84% of the world’s container fleet. Four main ways of developing blockchain technology in the field of maritime logistics management are distinguished: shipowner’s projects, ICT providers’ projects, supply chain operators’ projects, dedicated consortia projects. The main fields within which blockchain technology is currently tested or already implemented are identified as: contracting and documentation flow (e.g. Bill of Lading), smart contracts, container/cargo track-and-trace, marine insurance, ship register system, bunker tracking system, crew certification system. The results of the paper have some managerial implications. They can help in making strategic decisions by sea shipping companies and maritime logistics operators to decide if it is worth to engage in such projects and choose the best option for themselves.

Tytuł monografii: Slow steaming of container carriers. A study

Autor/Autorzy: Tadeusz Borkowski, Przemysław Kowalak, Bogusz Wiśnicki, Marcin Przywarty

Rok: 2019

Słowa kluczowe: slow steaming, container carrier, EEDI, EEOI, speed optimisation, exhaust gas emission, fuel consumption

Abstrakt: Maritime transport is facing a new and complex environmental issues that involves both challenges and opportunities. Climate change in particular continues to rank high on the international policy agenda, including that of shipping and port businesses. Recently, efficient and cost-effective sea transportation system that links global supply chains is the main measure fuelling economic development and prosperity. With more than 80 percent of global merchandise trade that is carried by sea and handled by ports worldwide, highlights the strategic economic importance of maritime shipping. Exhaust emissions from ships have been identified by main harmful components, namely: nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and complex particulate matter. Adverse effects of ships emission were found at local, regional and global levels, causing serious contribution to climate change and damage to the natural habitat. Scenarios for future emissions from ships show that effect of greenhouse gas from shipping is likely to increase. In response to these impacts the International Maritime Organization (IMO), introduced regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships and the regulatory framework presented in Chapter 1. In parallel, downturn in the global economy, resulting in reduced transportation capacity demand put the entire shipping chain, from cargo owners to carriers, ship managers and owners under big pressure. Slow steaming, meaning ship’s speed reduction is the easiest way to reduce operational cost and that is especially effective for fast vessels like container carriers. The IMO established indexes of greenhouse gases emissions from ships as well as recommendations of different technical and operational measures to be used. To achieve a successful energy management, it is necessary to evaluate adequately ship operational performance, taking into account its propulsion. In order to allow comparison of different ships and standardised approach is required. Chapter 2 and 3 describe the overall structure of a marine propulsion measurement system for energy optimization of working vessels with two basic operating profiles, determined by main propulsion construction. For this purpose, a model that fits the operating vessels and their flexible merchant employed patterns needs to be established, and it is important to have a comparable methodology supported by current legislations and technical standards. The model requires a detailed insight into the operation of a ship therefore, there has been involvement of marine engineers’ operational knowledge during the process of developing the model, that is presented in Chapter 4. Different approach needs to be engaged, since each ship’s mode of operation exhibits specific behaviour mechanism e.g. considering port operation, when the ship’s main engine is off and diesel generators and auxiliary steam boilers are the main energy and exhaust emission sources. It has been identified that enforcement of the energy efficiency indexes’ increases awareness, resulting in fuel savings, but the magnitude is to be confirmed. Popular operational practices that have been implemented include slow steaming, weather routing and trim optimization. Example of container carriers EEOI calculations, reported in Chapter 5 include popular maintenance practices like monitoring and timely maintenance of the main engine and onboard equipment, along with the effective reporting and energy distribution analysis. All these examples indicate that the ship operation decisions made at sea and ashore on a daily basis can influence fuel consumption and cause energy efficiency improvements. Among them voyage execution influences fuel consumption in various ways, in particular through ship’s service speed choice. Using constant speed during the voyage is an effective and popular fuel-saving measure relaying a stable service speed throughout the voyage and avoids costly high speeds. Ship operators use different models in order to calculate the economic speed for their ships. If they are not simplified ones, these models should take into account not only the most important factors but also variability and non-linear relationships between these factors. What is most economical speed will depend on such decision parameters as the freight market conditions, fuel prices, and cargo values and finally emission factors that is proposed as a modified approach in model specified and presented in Chapter 6. For energy efficient voyage execution, close communication between ship and shore is important regarding all the energy efficiency issues. As vessels’ fuel consumption depends on weather, current and wave conditions, all these factors should be taken into account in navigation. Bridge officers use frequently updated weather forecasts for decision support and change ship’s speed also in stormy weather and rough sea conditions. According to a nautical experiences slow steaming has the implication that the ship might suffer ability to stay on the fixed course, specified by the autopilot, while different minimum speeds would be executed. There is a possibility to predict wisely ship’s behaviour in such circumstances using modelling process and examples are given in Chapter 7. The main part of the work contained in Chapter 8 and Appendix is based on a large set of experimental data measured by the authors on ships during the sea operation. A very important component of these measurements was the exhaust emission, because this aspect, apart from typical energy indicators, was included in the structure of models, developed and applied in practice, discussed in Chapters 4 and 6. The analysis also includes comparison of the measurement results with the anticipated energy and emission performance for a small container ship, which was made according to the STEAM model of Finnish Meteorological Institute, that is considered as one of the most accurately estimating the ship’s performance, based on the AIS system. The effect of slow steaming experienced by container shipping presents a challenge, even if obviously saves fuel and reduces emissions. Significant technical challenges are encompassed in Chapter 9 and are outcome of the experience, gained from the operation of modern container carries, which are already designed for sailing at reduced speeds. The operational aspects presented in this chapter, indicate that for a full picture of slow steaming and a reliable operating costs calculation, they should be included in the analysis. At the end of the study, a number of conclusions were formulated, broadly related to container carriers and based on current development trends in this sector of maritime transport and current as well future global environmental regulations.

Abstrakt: The article is the result of a two-year research cooperation of the Maritime Academy in Szczecin and Bialystok University of Technology with foreign partners, in the framework of the project MELES (More Entrepreneurial Life at European Schools) funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. The main result of the project is the curriculum of Entrepreneurship course for multidisciplinary group of students and its implementation at universities. The authors describe determinants of academic teaching of business-oriented courses and an experience in this field of leading European and the USA universities. Presented examples of “good practice” come from: Stanford University and the University of California in the United States, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, the Technical University in Munich (Germany) and the Finnish Polytechnics Entrepreneur-Ship Network in Finland. Examination of changes made to curriculum in 2009–2015 based on selected engineer fields of study is carried out at three universities (Maritime University of Szczecin, Bialystok Technical University and Warsaw University of Technology). The teaching methods and programs of entrepreneurship courses in the academic year 2015/2016 at the selected universities are discussed. Detailed and general conclusions as well as recommendations for the program councils of technical universities responsible for the development and implementation of entrepreneurship courses are drawn on this basis. Special attention is devoted to aspect of multidisciplinary approach as well as to overcoming barriers of courses implementation.
